Erik ten Hag seemed to have put all doubts about Anthony Martial's Manchester United future out of his mind by backing him to do "even better" if he is able to stay motivated and focused.

The 26-year old Monaco signing was a big-money deal in 2015. He had lost his way at Old Trafford and had to join Sevilla on loan for the second part of last season.

Ralf Rangnick, interim boss of United, exposed Martial's unhappy state. Ten Hag, permanent successor to him at United, seems keen to give Martial another chance.

Ten Hag stated, "I'm certain he can return even better." He is a great player and I believe he can produce if he has the right mindset and focus.

"I tell him that if he is focused and able to deliver his maximum every day, he will produce. It's up for him."

Ten Hag was happy to see United's hardwork on the training field in action again Friday when Marcus Rashford's goal and Edmond Lupancu’s own goal secured the win.

After United had fallen behind in the fifth minute due to a Chris Ikonomidis goal, a deflected Scott McTominay strike and Martial's goal turned the match around just before the break.

Although the finish was as good and United's defense was poor, Ten Hag refused criticism of any individual.

The Dutchman stated, "I don’t want to speak about the individual because it was from high up the pitch at the start,"

"The wrong decisions and it all ends up looking like a pack of cards. It is not just one person, but the entire team that made mistakes. The opponent has a completely different approach to the second game.

"They are really tall, compact and they stand back. We had to make them ourselves, from the left side. It was difficult.

"From the right side, I was satisfied. We create a lot from the right side, four to five really great chances. The game turned around, that was the real good thing. We don't fall, we respond and we deal with setbacks.

"Sure, Jadon Sancho performed well. But I think the whole right-side played really well. There's a strong connection between Jadon Sancho, Bruno (Fernandes), Martial, and McTominay.

Rapahel Varane and David de Gea were both absent from the matchday squad in Melbourne. Ten Hag stated that the reasons they were absent were not serious.

He said, "You saw against Liverpool (De Gea), but he trains already." He is now back on the training pitch. It's not a big concern. Raphael Varane is also training, but it's a small thing and I expect him to be back on the training pitch.

What's next for Man Utd

United will remain in Melbourne for Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace at 11.10am. Then, United will travel to Perth to take on Aston Villa at 10.45am.
