Thomas Tuchel was thrilled to sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, but says Chelsea must keep bringing in "top quality", to be in the running for the Premier League.

Blues have signed a PS47.5m deal Wednesday to add Sterling into their squad. Tuchel, who spoke to Sky Sports News, described himself as "super happy" and said that the England forward would make a big improvement to the Chelsea squad.

After agreeing on a price of around PS32m , the London club is also close to capturing Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Chelsea coach however made it clear that if Chelsea are to challenge City and Liverpool for the top honours, they will need to continue to bring in high-calibre signings.

Tuchel stated that "the stakes are high" and that they will be competing against some of the most elite teams in the Premier League, as well as the best coaches.

"We are under sanctions. We lost top-quality players. Key players. We are a club transitioning ownership. We were also behind in transfer races and in the table. We have plenty to do.

"The signing of Raheem is a sign of what we can do, it shows the ambition and ownership of the club. It's good because we all want to win and compete.

"We love to compete, and we love the challenge at top." We need to sign new players of high quality if we are going to be able to do that.

Tuchel describes the relationship with Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and himself as "very close" and intense right now. The pair assist the head coach in transfers when he is not a permanent sporting director.

According to the German, the trio is focusing on bringing in top players that can be combined with the existing squad and young talent at the club.

Tuchel explained that the process of recruiting began with an analysis of the previous season and our performances.

"It's not secret that we have lost top players. We need to replace them. Even if they had stayed, it was clear that we needed to make improvements in order to close the gap. We need more.

"We have top players, and even better, we have a great team. However, if we want to bring in players, we need top quality and top character. Then we're talking about some of the best players in this game.

"What we won't forget is the mix because Chelsea is special because it has a lot of academy players. We'll never hesitate giving responsibility to them, pushing them, because this makes it special and exciting to me to be coach and part. This is the way to go."

Tuchel declined to comment on the links between Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski of Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. He said that signing another forward was "not the priority" after Sterling was added to the squad. His focus is now on Chelsea's backline.

"I wouldn't rule out signing another striker, but it is not my priority right now. Defence is the priority at this moment. It's not secret. Tuchel stated that from there, we must see what's possible."

"We are competing against two top teams, but Tottenham did an active and aggressive transfer period, they have perhaps the strongest squad they've ever had, with one of the most skilled coaches in the world. Man Utd never hesitate to recruit with a new coach, and Arsenal had some major signings so we need to keep the level high to be competitive."
