The shortlists for the selections were created by the members of the players trade union during January. They were later voted on by other players from the leagues.

In all, six Liverpool players received starting positions at the top of the list for this prestigious prize which included Alisson Becker Trent Alexander-Arnold Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

While at the same time, Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were Champions Manchester City, with only two other clubs in the XI.

Antonio Rudiger earned an opportunity to start following his impressive campaign at Chelsea ended with the Germany international signing a contract with Real Madrid on a free transfer when his contract runs out in June.

In the end, Cristiano Ronaldo had a turbulent season after the return of Manchester United but remained talismanic when the mood and the results were sour on the pitch at Old Trafford - registering 18 goals in just 27 games to be a part of the XI.

Teammates Ann-Katrin Berger, Millie Bright and Guro Reiten join the Australia internationals in the team that has won awards - amounting to four players of Emma Hayes' champions making the grade of gold.

Arsenal finished the season just one point short of those of the Blues and are just one player less than the Blues' XI including Leah Williamson, Kim Little and goalkeeper Vivianne Miedema making the grade.

Manchester City and England trio Alex Greenwood, Caroline Weirand Lauren Hemp - who was selected as the PFA Young Player of Year, for the 4th consecutive time - was selected, as did Manchester United right-back Ona Batlle.

Nine of the players who play for promoted teams are part of the Championship team of the season, which includes five players from champions Fulham. Bournemouth, which finished in the second spot for automatic promotion, has three representatives while the play-off champions Nottingham Forest have one.

The season is League One, players from nine clubs are part of the team for the season. The champions Wigan as well as Milton Keynes Dons have two representatives. Portsmouth, Rotherham, Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United, Morecambe and Sunderland each have a player.

The champions Forest Green Rovers dominate the League Two team of the season, having five players in the top XI. Three of the players who play for Northampton Town - who finished fourth in the league - comprise the team and Exeter, Tranmere and Newport County each have a player.
